Developers love code… and slide decks! When I give talks, a lot of attendees ask for the slide deck afterwards. And I must admit, I do exactly the same: it’s a great reference when working with the technology afterwards, some parts of it still remain in your brain, so it’s an easy way to quickly get more info on a certain subject.
That’s one of the main reasons I post them all on my blog (the second reason is that perhaps you are also speaking on a topic covered in one of my talks and you would like to use the slides. You’re absolutely welcome to do so :) ).

However, if you’re like me, during the preparation of a talk, I tend to add quite a few notes in my slide decks. While there are no great secrets in there, it’s most of the time best to remove them. With previous versions of Powerpoint, removing these comments either needed to be done manually or either by a macro (at least, that’s the way I did it, I’m no Powerpoint savvy, mind you!).

Now, in Powerpoint 2007, it’s quite easy to do it automatically.

Go to the Office button and click on “Prepare”. Within the “Prepare” menu, select the “Inspect document” option.

image

The window that now opens, called the Document Inspector, allows you to search your slide deck for “personal information” like notes.

Click on Inspect. As you can see, my deck still contains some notes and personal document properties (probably my name). You can click on Remove all to remove all the comments and notes from the Powerpoint 2007 slide deck.

It's official! The consumer release of Windows Vista and Office 2007 will be celebrated in New York on January 29 at a launch event the software giant has dubbed "The WOW starts now." The invitation to "The "WOW starts now" event includes a note signed by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, in which he says that, "on January 29th, Microsoft will celebrate the launch of two amazing products that represent the culmination of a tremendous team effort."

Attendees will be treated to a celebratory lunch at Manhattan's famous Cipriani restaurant, followed by the actual launch event at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square later in the day.

Gates goes on to say that millions of people--Microsoft employees, developers, customers, bloggers, families, media, the entire industry--"have come together like never before and added their own individual imprints to help make Windows Vista and 2007 Microsoft Office system the most tested products in Microsoft history."

It keep on raining official announcements these last days...

Just hours ago, MS announced the packaging of Vista and Office 2007.

"Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that’s designed to protect the software inside for life-long use. It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation.

The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today. Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system."

If you don't like the mandatory anti-piracy checks that Microsoft now enforces for Windows, brace yourself. The Microsoft Office productivity and collaboration suite is about to get a similar program.

The company's Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program will require mandatory validation of Office software starting October 27, the software vendor quietly disclosed today. After that date, any Office Online templates downloaded from within the Office 2007 Microsoft Office System applications will require validation of legitimacy.

Similarly, starting in January, users of Office Update will have to validate the legitimacy of their Office software before they can use the service, Microsoft added.

Users absolutely hated the first iteration of the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program, and their protests pressured the company into revising it about a year after it launched in July 2005.

Microsoft said in a press statement that the validation process will be "quick and simple" for users. The OGA program, currently in the testing phase, is now available in 26 languages worldwide. OGA is a sibling program to WGA; both automatically check a user's version of Microsoft software to ensure it is not counterfeit or pirated.

Gill Cleeren     Office 2007 | Vista     September 1, 2006

To start the day, Neowin put up a "release calendar" for Office 2007.

Office 2007 Beta 1: 17.11.2005
Office 2007 Beta 1 TR: 13.03.2006?
Office 2007 Beta 2: 22.05.2006
Office 2007 Beta 2 TR: 14/15.9.2006
Office 2007 RTM: 25-28.10.2006 - Business customers -> volume licensing
Office 2007 Release Date: 30.01.2007- Home Users -> Retail and OEM

Amazon is also taking orders for Vista as well as Office, and they set 30.01.2007 as the release date. No word from MS on this, though...

Meanwhile, Vista RC1 is not here yet either. Paul Thurrott is now mentioning that build 5600.16384 may be the official RC1. When it will be released... no word on that, since no one actually knows at the moment.

Over 500.000 people have downloaded Office 2007 Beta 2 in the couple of first days it was available. That's a lot, a whole lot! Chances are that you are 1 of these, isn't it?

Now, finding some spare time to get to know the new interface, learning how to program for the new office... that's the hardest part.

Here are some interesting resources to get you started with the new suite in no time (even without installing it!!)
1. To get to know the basics, go to the Office 2007 preview site. Don't feel like installing it? No problem, just watch some videos on the new interface.

2. If you are a developer like myself, you're probably more interested in developing for the new Office. Chances are that you find what you are looking for in the Office developer center. In the What's new section, you can also find links to the most important Office blogs.

3. If Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server is your cup of tea, you're gonna be thrilled when reading in the Servers section of the developer site. Some nice screenshots of Office Sharepoint 2007 can be found here.

Hope this brings some clarity in all the "Office violence" that awaits us!
