Test-Aankoop, the Belgian consumer group, launched a campaign to stop the expensive internet prices in Belgium. Part of this is a petition that can be signed here.

Yesterday, the Belgian copyright watchdog named SABAM, which is kind of the same as MPAA and RIAA, wrote a letter to the 2 largest Belgian ISPs, pushing them to install download filters to prevent illegal material being downloaded.

While SABAM has been trying to do something on the 'copyright infringements' in Belgium, they have had very little success. In 2004, they started a lawsuit against a small ISP, at that time called Tiscali. Tiscali merged with Scarlet, and became the third provider in our country. In the lawsuit, SABAM wanted that the ISP would take measures to prevent the use of p2p programs, in particular by installing filters. The judge agreed with SABAM that customers were downloading illegal material, but ordered an investigation to see whether it was technically possible to create and install such filter software. A few weeks ago, the judge ordered Scarlet to install these filters by the end of this year, as it was found possible to use them.

Yesterday, as was expected, SABAM wrote a letter to Belgacom and Telenet, ordering them to also install filters within 8 days, if not, they would be sued too. Belgacom said in a statement that they are investigating the letter. 'However', they added, 'we agree that copyright infringements are not right, but we will not take measures that will interfere with our customers' privacy.'

ISPA, the association of ISPs, also made a public statement on the case. Wim Roggeman of ISPA explains: 'Filtering is very expensive and it's not efficient. Customers will be able to get round it without any problems. We act as a transport system and will not play police officer to check what goes over our network.' As we understand, it's the customer that will again have to pay for this filter. Mind you that Belgium already has the most expensive fees for internet: a standard subscription with 10 GB costs $45 - 50 a month!

Meanwhile, SABAM is satisfied with the court order as can be read here. They hope that what happened in Belgium will be an example for other countries.
I do believe people at SABAM are very naive. Filters will NOT hold anyone back, apart from the few users that still download some music via Limewire and others.

A nice story on Yahoo.com's frontpage today...

World's most premature baby is thriving, Miami hospital says (here). No, Snowball.be is not turning into a baby-newsroom... Why do I put this here then?
When you read a little further, you can read the following: When she was born on October 24, Amillia Taylor weighed just 280 grams (10 ounces) and measured 240 centimeters (9.5 inches,) slightly longer than a ballpoint pen, the hospital said.

Now, that is one HUGE baby!

Anyway, let's all hope she'll be OK...

Screenshot below for when they correct the error!

Since years, I'm a member of the forum of tweakers.net (gathering.tweakers.net). A couple of days ago, in one of these forums, some people posted "real life html tags"... Maybe it becomes a new hype, maybe this is a way for people to remember the tags more easily... Anyway, I found them funny enough to share them with my readers.

Some companies really would do anything to keep their staff happy. On this page, a collection of images can be found, on which some of the best looking workplaces can be found.

Pixar, Red Bull... anyone?

About time someone said it!
Some companies don't seem to be getting that the world has changed, and that the internet is an everyday-thing, just like a telephone. Over at my company, everybody has full access to the internet, email, IM... I'm certainly not suggesting that one should make abuse of their internet access at the workfloor. But what is more relaxing than reading something on the web while drinking your coffee in the morning... Or eating at the PC, while looking up something.

Companies who don't seem to be getting this, will face serious issues in the time to come. You might think, are there still companies like this? Yes! More than you would think!! Most of these can be found in old, traditional sectors, where time has been standing still. People who work there have not evolved either, and easily follow the old rules that the company issues. Most of the time, these companies are governed by very conservative people. People that don't think out of the box. A race that will extinct, since young people will not be willing to work for them. And that's just good.
It's their opinion still that internet is loss of time. Well, think twice. If people are feeling locked in, they'll be less productive, resulting in higher costs for the company. And in the future, it'll result in these firms not finding any dynamic employees, resulting in even more problems... Down the drain indeed.

I have had this opinion for quite some time, and now Microsoft has expressed that same opinion, as can be read here:

Jobseekers will think twice about employers who lock down work internet access, a senior Microsoft executive said today.“These kids are saying: forget it! I don’t want to work with you. I don’t want to work at a place where I can’t be freely online during the day,” said Anne Kirah, Microsoft Senior Design Anthropologist.
“People that I meet are saying this to me every day, all over the world.”Kirah made the comments during the keynote at the opening of Microsoft’s annual developer love-in, Tech.Ed, in Sydney. “Companies all over the world are saying, oh, you can’t be on the internet while you’re at work. You can’t be on instant messaging at work…” she said. “These are digital immigrant ideas.”

Kirah defines ‘digital immigrants’ as people who were not born into the digital lifestyle and view it as a distraction rather than an integral part of life. The younger generation of workers have been using computers and mobile phones since birth and she calls them ‘digital natives’. Kirah cited a Norwegian psychologist who claimed that young people were now so reliant on digital communication that “taking a mobile phone away from a teenage girl is the same as child abuse.”

“Digital communication is part of people’s lives now. Their friends online are the people they identify with.”

The rest of this very interesting article can be read here.

Days after the people of Sophos Antivirus came out with a list of the most active “spammer countries”, the Australian newspaper The Age found something rather interesting on the list.

Not only the U.S., China and Australia are on this list, but the Vatican (Vatican City) is on the list too! Spam is often sent by people who’s computers are infected or taken over.
The fact that the Vatican is on this list means that at least 1 computer over there is infected, probably with a Trojan horse is.

If a spam-blocker is not enough anymore to keep spam away, one could always say a little prayer for Saint-Isidorius, the patron saint of the internet!

At the Vatican, they should start right now I guess!

Don't know if this is interesting, but hey, what the heck... Not much news these days anyhow, so one has to keep busy ;-)

This download from Microsoft is a very large Excel, with translations in over 40 languages, of some (actually, a lot...) terms related to technology. Could come in handy, isn't it?

Thank you, gill... Well, no thank you?? Pfuh... ;-) (Sorry, the heat is getting to me I guess)

Not soooo long ago, about 10 years back, the internet was starting its rise.
Lots of sites we know today started back then...

This site has some nostalgic screens from the early days of the internet. Take a look.

Never had any virus on my PC actually, though I have been on the net since 1999... However, some "great" (might not be the correct word to use...) virusses have hit the computer world ever since.

Virusses like Melissa, MyDoom and Sobig caused billions of dollars worth of damage...

Nowadays, gigantic virus outbreaks seem to become more rare, and I recently read that spam and spyware has passed virusses in amount of loss of money.

But, perhaps for the sake of nostalgia, here you can read an article on the most destructible virusses to date.
